Visa Note
(a) Special permission must be sought by those wishing to visit border zones. (b) Visa regulations within the CIS are liable to change at short notice. Prospective travelers are advised to contact the nearest Turkmenistan embassy well in advance of intended date of departure. (c) Travelers must not overstay their visas. Travelers should also register with the State Service of Turkmenistan for the Registration of Foreign Nationals if staying for more than three days. (d) Tourists should normally book through a recognized tour operator, who will obtain visas on their behalf; (e) Visitors intending to stay for more than three months must produce a certificate stating that they are HIV-negative. (f) Nationals without an embassy/consulate of Turkmenistan can obtain a visa on arrival, but prior permission to enter the country must be obtained before traveling. (g) Nationals not referred to in the chart above are advised to contact the embassy to check visa requirements (see Important Addresses).
Types of Visa and Cost
Dependent upon nationality and duration of stay; visas can be granted for anything from 10 days to 12 months with costs varying from €35 to €505. Fees are doubled for an express service.

Travel Warnings
There is a low threat from terrorism. But you should be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks, which could be in public places, including those frequented by expatriates and foreign travelers.
You should carry an identity document at all times. Requests to produce proof of identity, for example by the police, are frequent.
Do not overstay your visa. You should also register with the State Service of Turkmenistan for the Registration of Foreign Nationals if you are staying for more than three days.
You should ensure your inoculations are up to date. Typhoid and Hepatitis A are endemic.

Health Care
Medical insurance, including cover for emergency repatriation, is highly recommended. Medical facilities are poor, high levels of disease have been reported. Travelers are advised to take a well-equipped first aid kit with them containing basic medicines and any prescriptions that they may need.
