Shopping in Beijing, China
Beijing's shopping scene has modernized in a big way in recent years. A wide range of consumer goods (both local and imported) are now available, and shopping malls, luxury brand outlets and car dealerships are mushrooming across the city.
Markets
Housed in a giant warehouse-style mall, the Beijing Silk Market, 8 Xiushui Dajie, is a tourist trap, but its fine tailor-made clothes are worth the hard bargaining. Yashow, in Sanlitun, offers a similar multi-floor experience. Collectors of antiques should head to Liulichang, a few minutes' walk south of Heping Men subway station. This Beijing market is crammed with ancient-style shops, reconstructed in a traditional way and stocking antiques - some are genuine, though many are reproduced - and curios. The open-air weekend market at Panjiayuan Jiuhuo Shichang has great bargains on items such as jade, wood paneling, pottery and memorabilia.
Shopping centers
The vast Oriental Plaza mall, on Wangfujing Dajie, has many brand stores, as does the China World Center, Shin Kong Plaza, The Place and Peninsula Hotel Plaza, which all cater to those with upscale-brand obsessions and large wallets. The Village in Sanlitun, with its designer labels and incredibly eye-catching architecture, is Beijing's trendiest modern shopping complex.
Key areas
The main tourist shopping area is pedestrianized Wangfujing Dajie, crammed with brand outlets and department stores. Sanlitun, with The Village and nearby Yashow Market, is another popular shopping area in Beijing.
