Southampton, England — Overview
Southampton's maritime status is a key part of the city's identity. With over 240 cruise ships departing from its port every year, it is arguably the cruise capital of Europe. It is also the city from which the ill-fated Titanic departed and sank almost a century ago; special commemorative events are planned in 2012. However, this city also has a lively arts scene, interesting museums and is in the process of some exciting new developments. A new-look Southampton is set to emerge over the coming years. A central Cultural Quarter, including the Mayflower Theater, the City Art Gallery, a proposed New Arts Complex and a Sea City Museum - which will have a climb-aboard scale model of the Titanic - are to be developed, providing the city with a new heart. In 2011, its new Town Quay Marina opened. Surrounded by public parks, Southampton has plenty of green spaces, and also lies close to the glorious New Forest, a short journey via Hythe Ferry, or a ferry or hovercraft voyage from the Isle of Wight.
