Travel Warnings
Following flooding and landslides caused by heavy rain around the Funchal and the Ribeira Brava areas of Madeira on Saturday 20 February, over 40 people were killed and a number injured. Following an extensive clear-up operation, the situation is fast returning to normality, with the airport, main roads and phone network all operating normally, but there may be some isolated problems.
Visitors are advised to avoid the areas in central Funchal, where the clear-up operation is underway, and the slopes of the mountains, which may still be unstable especially following any further rain. Visitors are advised to check the local weather forecast at: www.meteo.pt/en/. The Regional Government of Madeira has published reports on the incident on the official tourism website: www.madeiraislands.travel.
The Honorary Consulate in Funchal is open for business as usual. Visitors to the Consulate should note that until clear-up operations in Funchal have finished, it will be necessary to complete the last five minutes of the journey on foot.
Weather conditions in Iberia are currently unpredictable.
There is an underlying threat from terrorism. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travelers.
You should be alert to the risk of petty theft.
There is a legal requirement for you to show some form of identification (i.e., your passport) if requested by the police or judicial authorities, especially if you intend to drive in Portugal.
