The Hague Culture

The Hague has a thriving cultural scene both for locals and English-language visitors.There are many performing arts venues around the city. The main ones are: Fortis Circustheater, Circusstraat 4 (tel: (070) 416 7607; website: www.fortiscircustheater.nl) for musicals and theater; the Lucent Danstheater, Spui 150 (tel: (070) 880 0333; website: www.ldt.nl) for dance, jazz, musicals, classical music, opera and world music; and The Hague Philharmonic, Spuiplein 150 (tel: (070) 880 022; website: www.residentieorkest.nl), in a dazzling glass black box building near the station.

The Diligentia Theater (tel: 0900 410 4104; website: www.theater-diligentia.nl) stages several regular ‘English-spoken performances’, including cabaret, stand-up comedy and family performances. All mainstream cinemas (bioscoops) in The Hague show films in their original language. The Pathé Bioscoop on Buitenhof occupies a beautiful Jugendstil building.

The Haags Uitburo, Hofweg 1 (tel: 0900 8282 999; website: www.haagsuitburo.nl) is the main source of information for what’s on and sells tickets for most cultural events in the city and beyond. Pick up the official magazines Uit Magazine or Haagenda, both distributed free of charge around the city.

The Hague Tours

There are no off-the-peg tours for individual visitors. However the tourist office at Hofweg 1 has many ideas and publications for self-guided tours and will be pleased to supply you with the name of a local guide.
