Naples, Italy — Activities

Naples Culture

Music and Theater: The Teatro San Carlo, Via San Carlo (tel: 081 797 2111; website: www.teatrosancarlo.it), is one of the oldest music theaters in the world and the musical heart of Naples, hosting opera and ballet performances as well as classical concerts. The most beautiful of the city’s many theaters is undoubtedly Teatro Bellini, Via Conte di Ruvo 14 (tel: 081 549 1266; website: www.teatrobellini.it), which is located in the city center. It opened in 1864 and has been damaged both by fires and earthquakes over the years, but it is still going strong. The program consists mostly of theater and musical theater productions. Teatro Augusteo, Piazzetta Duca d’Aosta (tel: 081 414 243; website: www.teatroaugusteo.it) also has a city center location. It hosts dramatic plays, musicals and musical theater as well as popular and classical music concerts. The Sannazzaro Theater, Via Chiaia 157 (tel: 081 411 723) stages popular theater in both senses of the word. The plays are about ordinary people and often in dialect, and lots of people come to see them.

Cinema:
Naples has a vast number of cinemas. Cinema Fiorentini, Via Bracco 5 (tel: 081 551 0483), is a traditional cinema in the city center screening mainstream Italian and international films. The Cinema Modernissimo Multicinema, Via Cisterna dell’Olio 59 (tel: 081 551 1247), is, as the name suggests, a more modern cinema and has four screens. Cinema Filangieri, Via Filangieri 43 (tel: 081 251 2408), is a multiscreen cinema with a certain arthouse profile and the focus on European and Italian films.
