Shopping

Copenhagen has excellent shopping facilities. Special purchases include Bing & Grøndal and Royal Copenhagen porcelain, Holmegård glass, Bornholm ceramics, handmade woolens from the Faroe Islands and Lego toys. Visitors from outside the EU can often claim back some of the MOMS (VAT) on goods purchased that are sent straight to their home country from the shop in Denmark.

Shopping hours: Mon-Fri 0900/1000-1730/1800, Sat 0900-1700. Supermarkets are often open Mon-Fri 0900-2000. Opening hours vary from town to town. At some vacation resorts, bakers, florists and souvenir shops are open Sunday and public holidays.

Currency

Danish Krone (DKK; symbol kr) = 100 øre. Notes are in denominations of kr1,000, 500, 200, 100 and 50. Coins are in denominations of kr20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 and 50 øre.

The 25 øre coin was removed from circulation in October 2008 but will be accepted by banks until 1 October 2011.

Currency Exchange

Personal checks cannot be used by visitors to Denmark. Some banks may refuse to exchange large foreign bank notes.

Credit Cards, Debit Cards, and ATMs

American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted. There are plenty of ATMs.

Travelers Checks

Can be cashed by banks and hotels, and can be used at most restaurants and shops. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travelers are advised to take traveler's checks in Euros, Pounds Sterling or US Dollars.

Currency Restrictions

There are no restrictions on the import or export of local or foreign currency. However, amounts exceeding €10,000 or equivalent must be declared if traveling from or to a country outside the European Union.

Banking Hours

Mon to Wed and Fri 0930-1700, Thurs 0930-1800. Some banks in Copenhagen are open Mon-Fri 0930-1700. Some bureau de change are open until 2400.
