Split, Croatia — Activities

Split Culture

The highlight of the cultural calendar is the Split Summer Festival (see Special Events) featuring evening performances of music and drama at various open-air locations in the old town, with the best-loved event being opera on Peristil.

During the rest of the year, the Hrvastsko Narodno Kazalište (Croatian National Theater) at Trg Gaje Bulata 1 (tel: (021) 344 399; website: www.hnk-split.hr), produces opera, drama, classical music and ballet.

Cinemas show films in the original version with subtitles. In summer, Kino Bačvice is a delightful open-air cinema in a garden above Bačvice Bay. Other year-round cinemas in Split are: Central, Trg Gaje Bulata bb (tel: (021) 343 813); Karaman, Ilicev prilaz 3 (tel: (021) 345 833); Marjan, Trg Republike 1 (tel: (021) 347 838) and Tesla, Kralja Tomislava 15 (tel: (021) 344 633).

For information about cultural events, pick up a monthly leaflet from the Tourist Information Center (TIC) on Peristil.

Split Tours

The Tourist Guide Service, run by the Udruga Vodica (Guide Association), is based on Peristil (tel: (021) 360 058). They offer tours of the historic center, on foot, both for individuals and groups, in a wide choice of languages. In addition, Split Tours (tel: (021) 352 533; website: www.sem-marina.hr) offers a half-day city tour, which explores the historic monuments within the walls of Diocletian’s Palace, then moves along the coast to the Meštrović Gallery. Lunch is an optional extra.
