Within the past few years, a great many new boutiques have opened offering a wide range of merchandise. Good buys are basketry, embroidery, hammocks, pottery, wood sculpture and gold jewelry.

Shopping hours: Mon-Sat 0800-1300, 1600-1830, Sun 0900-1230.

Currency

The Euro is the official currency for the French Overseas Departments French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion. For further details, see France section.

Currency Exchange

There is a bureau de change at Rochambeau airport and in Cayenne. They will exchange money every day except Saturday.

Credit Cards, Debit Cards, and ATMs

American Express, Carte Bleue, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are accepted. ATMs can be found in Cayenne, Ile de Cayenne, Kourou and Saint Laurent du Maroni.

Travelers Checks

These are accepted in a few places in Cayenne and Kourou. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travelers are advised to take traveler's checks in Euros, US Dollars or Pounds Sterling.

Currency Restrictions

There are no restrictions on the import or export of local or foreign currency. However, amounts exceeding €10,000 or equivalent must be declared if traveling from or to a country outside the European Union.
