French Guiana — Accommodations
Hotels
Since French Guiana was chosen as a site for the European Space Agency, a number of well-appointed air-conditioned hotels have been built. International chains are found mainly along the coast. Prices are the highest on the continent. Cayenne, Kourou, Sinnamary and St Laurent du Maroni all offer excellent accommodation. Most have a ranking with a level of service up to three stars.
Self Catering
Gîtes de France (www.gites-de-france.fr) promotes environmentally-friendly tourism and has forest-located self-catering properties. Gîtes d'Amazonie are inspired by traditional Amerindian homes, located in a well-preserved natural environment, usually near a river. Gîtes which display the Gîtes Panda Tropicales sign have signed a charter of good environmental practice with the WWF.
Self Catering
Clévacances network offers apartments for rental with or without bed and breakfast. These are mainly in Cayenne, Kourou and occasionally in more rural areas. The number of keys indicates the level of comfort. For further information contact the Comité du Tourisme de la Guyane.
Camping/Caravanning
Carbets d'Hôtes (a jungle version of a shack) provide bed (in a hammock) and breakfast in a natural setting. The host will introduce lodgers to local specialties. It is also possible to hire a camper van. For further information contact the Comité du Tourisme de la Guyane.
