Shopping

Frenchimports are worthwhile purchases, especially wines, liqueurs and crystal. Local items include rum, straw goods, bamboo hats, creole dolls, creole jewelry, baskets and objects of aromatic vetiver roots. A discount of 20% is given if payment is made by traveler’s checks in some tourist shops.

Currency

The Euro is the official currency for the French Overseas Departments (Départements d’outre-mer), French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion. For further details, see France section. US Dollars are also accepted in some places.

Currency Exchange

All major currencies can be exchanged at banks and bureau de change.

Credit Cards, Debit Cards, and ATMs

American Express, Diners Club and Visa are accepted in the major tourist areas. MasterCard has limited acceptance. Cards can also be used in ATMs.

Travelers Checks

Accepted in most places, and may qualify for discounts on luxury items. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travelers are advised to take traveler’s checks in Euros or US Dollars.

Currency Restrictions

There are no restrictions on the import or export of local or foreign currency. However, amounts exceeding €10,000 or equivalent must be declared if traveling from or to a country outside the European Union.
