Shopping

The reductions on duty-free imports make the purchase of some perfume, jewelry or alcohol worthwhile. Bonaire prides itself on its unique, specialist stores. Watches, Dutch cheese, fine China and Cuban cigars are usually sold.

Shopping hours: Mon-Sat 0800/0900-1200 and 1400-1800. Larger supermarkets are open Monday-Saturday 0730/0800-1900, with some open Sunday 1100-1400. Hours vary widely and those stated above must be treated simply as guidelines.

Currency

The Netherlands Antilles Guilder or Florin (ANG; symbol ƒ) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of ƒ250, 100, 50, 25, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of ƒ5, 2.5, 1 and 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1 cents. The US Dollar is accepted everywhere although change is given in Guilders.

The Netherlands Antilles Guilder is tied to the US Dollar.

Currency Exchange

Most major currencies, including US Dollars, Pounds Sterling and Euros, are easily exchanged. ATMs are located around the island.

Credit Cards, Debit Cards, and ATMs

American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted.

Travelers Checks

To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travelers are advised to take traveler's checks in US Dollars.

Currency Restrictions

There are no restrictions on the import or export of local or foreign currency.
