In 1992, the Bahamas abolished all import duties. Popular buys include perfumes, crystal, leather, jewelry, linens, watches, cameras and china. Straw goods, ceramics, clothing, seashell jewelry, paintings and woodcarvings are made locally - look out for 'Authentically Bahamian' stamp for a quality guarantee.

Shopping hours:
Mon-Sat 0830/0900-1730. Some shops open until 1900 and some open Sun 1000/1100-1600/1700.

Currency

Bahamian Dollar (BSD; symbol B$) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of B$100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 3 and 1, and 50 cents. Coins are in denominations of 25, 15, 10, 5 and 1 cents.

The Bahamian Dollar has parity with the US Dollar and the latter is also accepted as legal tender.

Currency Exchange

Available in banks, bureau de change and hotels.

Credit Cards, Debit Cards, and ATMs

American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted. ATMs are available on the major islands in airport terminals, at banks, casinos and at other convenient locations.

Travelers Checks

To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travelers are advised to take traveler's checks in US Dollars.

Currency Restrictions

Permission is required from the Central Bank of The Bahamas to import local currency, which may be exported up to a maximum of B$70. The import and export of foreign currency are unlimited.
