Cuisine

Restaurants at Cullen Bay Marina in Darwin offer outdoor dining with beautiful ocean views. It's an area full of yachts and trendy cafés. The transit center arcade offers cheaper dining options, while the Wharf precinct and Mitchell Street in the city center have restaurants specializing in seafood and Asian cuisine. Mitchell Street also has an abundance of bars including Rorke's Drift and Top End Hotel. Expect to find international flavors, including Indonesian, Greek, Indian, Japanese, Malaysian and Thai, on many menus in restaurants of the larger towns including Katherine and Alice Springs.

Regional specialties:
• The ngarlkirdi, or witchetty grub, is considered a delicacy - either raw or cooked.
• Kakadu plum jam, spread on toast.
Quandongs, a native peach with a delicate flavor, usually served stewed or in ice cream.
Barramundi, freshly caught and cooked, is a staple on most restaurant menus.

Regional drinks:
• Bush tea, made from native plants such as leptospermum, referred to as tea tree.
• Cappuccino is often seasoned with wattle seed.

Nightlife

There is plenty of nightlife in Darwin with some of the best at outdoor foreshore bars where a beer and a flaming red sunset in tropical heat is unforgettable. The city also boasts the Skycity Darwin (www.skycitydarwin.com.au), built in an extraordinary modern architectural style. This A$30-million casino complex also encompasses luxury accommodation, restaurants, discos and sporting and convention facilities and is surrounded by lush gardens perched along the shores of Mindil Beach.
