Souks in the main towns are the workplaces of many weavers, copper-, gold- and silversmiths and leatherworkers. There are numerous other stalls selling a variety of items including spices, metal engravings and various pieces of jewelry. Other local craft specialties include the famous embroidered Ghadames slippers, pottery from Gharian, trays and baskets made from palm leaves, and leather bags and belts.

Shopping hours: Sat-Thurs 0800-1330 and 1600-2000, Fri 0900-1200.

Currency

Libyan Dinar (LYD; symbol LD) = 1,000 dirhams. Notes are in denominations of LD20, 10, 5, 1, 1/2 and 1/4 dinars. Coins are in denominations of 100, 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1 dirhams and 1/2 and 1/4 dinars.

Credit Cards, Debit Cards, and ATMs

Libya is a cash society. Credit cards are not widely used, although some are accepted in major hotels and banks. There are few reliable ATMs in Tripoli.

Travelers Checks

Traveller's checks are generally not accepted.

Currency Restrictions

The import and export of local currency is prohibited. Import of foreign currency is subject to declaration, export is limited to the amount declared on arrival.

Sat-Thurs 0700-1400 and 1600-1800.
