Cooper River Bridge Run
The 2010 event was the 38th year of this popular events which attracts close on 40,000 participants. The 10km event draws international athletes but is mostly aimed at amateur runners. The route is from Mt Pleasant to Downtown Charleston, taking in the iconic Cooper River Bridge along the way. A fun-filled festival runs over the weekend of the race.
World Grits Festival
Hardly the most popular dish on the planet, grits (a maize porridge) is nonetheless a staple of Southern culture and this festival aims to increase its popularity. The town of St George is proud of its grits and consumes so much of it that in 1985, this festival began in honor of the tasteless maize dish. Events at the festival include the obligatory grits eating competition as well as corn tossing, live music and DJ’s.
Cycle South Carolina
Cycle South Carolina is a six-day, 400 mile (about 640km) cycle tour, beginning and ending in Charleston, which takes in some of South Carolina’s most beautiful and historic scenery. It is an immensely popular event (space is limited to 500 riders); both with South Carolinans, and cyclists from elsewhere in America, who appreciate the opportunity to spend some time on the road, while at the same time enjoying the splendor of the pine- and palmetto-filled landscape. Nightly entertainment (including a Jimmy Buffet cover band!) is provided at all the rest stops.
Coastal Carolina Fair
The Coastal Carolina Fair is held in Charleston annually, offering fantastic family entertainment. Highlights include everything from nightly fireworks displays and live music performances to circus acts, fair rides, art shows and a petting zoo. Not to be missed for great family fun!
