The Qatar Masters
The Qatar Masters golf tournament is held annually at the Doha Golf Club as part of the European and Asian PGA tours, attracting golfers and fans from around the world. The competition takes place on the unique and challenging desert-style course designed by Peter Harradine, one of best golf course designers in the world today.
Emir GCC Camels Race
The Al Far racetrack in Al Shahaniya is the place to be during April for the Emirs Camel Race. This race is a popular attraction for tourists and Qataris alike. Camels and their riders compete for the prestigious Golden Sword as well as a number of other prizes and trophies. The ungainly stride of the camels and the shouting of their riders as they try to convince their steeds to run in a straight line is worth the drive to Al Shahaniya.
Summer Wonders Festival
The Qatar Summer Wonders Festival of Fun is held annually at the International Exhibition Center and various other locations around the city. This popular event features local and international music, dance and circus performances, as well as parades, fireworks and educational activities. See a rainforest replica or the Antiques Village, showcasing Qatar’s Bedouin past. Beshara Iceland, an indoor snow village display, is another highlight of the festival.
Qatar National Pure Arabian Horse Show
The Arabian horse breed originated on the Arabian Peninsula and is one of the oldest horse breeds in the world. Originally bred by the Bedouin people, these horses, prized for their agility, speed and beauty, are highly sought after across the globe. The Qatar National Pure Arabian Horse Show is an event that showcases some of the top Arabian horses and best bloodlines in the industry. Experts and equestrian enthusiasts flock to the show to see these magnificent animals on display.
FIFA World Cup 2022
In December 2010 it was announced that Qatar will be hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2022. Qatar competed against the likes of England and was eventually successful in winning the bid to host the 2022 Soccer World Cup. This will be the first world cup hosted by an Arab nation. Top teams from across the globe will compete for the coveted Jules Rimet Trophy. Some of the top teams in the world include Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Uruguay. The desert country has plans for air conditioned stadiums as well as stadiums built on reclaimed ‘islands’ in the Arabian Gulf.
