Nicaragua — Events
Holy Week
As with most Latin American countries, religious festivals are colorful affairs. Festivities and celebrations over Holy Week are a countrywide event in Nicaragua. Each town and city celebrates Holy Week differently and visitors will be spoilt for choice when it comes to picking which town’s festival they would like to attend. The towns of Nandaime, San Juan de Oriente, Masaya and San Jose de Gracia celebrate the festival by sending ox-drawn carts carrying pilgrims and flags to the Popoyupa Sanctuary in Rivas.
Managua Toro Guaco
Every town and city in Nicaragua has a patron saint. The Toro Guaco festival celebrates and honors the patron saints of each town. Toro Guaco festivals take place throughout the year in different cities across Nicaragua. The most popular and colorful Toro Guaco Festival takes place in Managua. Managuans dress up in 1500s fashion and many pose as characters from Spanish folklore.
Feast of San Jeronimo
The Feast of San Jeronimo is a popular week-long Nicaragua festival held in the town of Masaya. The celebration is marked with fireworks, partying, music and dance. Visitors to Nicaragua can enjoy fairs and parades during this festival in Masaya.
