Tour Overview
Often referred to as the 'land of silence', Sardinia is a place of outstanding natural beauty, with crystal-clear rivers, limestone ridges and deep gorges. As well as stunning beaches, the Dorgali area attracts archaeologists from all over the world because of its historic interest. During our varied walks through the heart of the region, we will pass many monuments from the times of the Nuraghi people, one of the main Mediterranean prehistoric civilisations. Some walks are possible from the hotel door, and on other days we use private or public transport to take us to the trailhead, to explore the ridges, valleys, gorges and peaks of this fascinating island.
Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1Start Hotel S’Adde, Dorgali, (3hrs journey from Cagliari airport)
Day 2
We start with an excellent orientation walk through a maze of old paths around Monte Tului (916m), which boasts one of the most beautiful views of the Gulf of Orosei along with the mountainous inland around Dorgali. We pass some fascinating old shepherd’s huts to witness the traditional Sardinian way of life.
Day 3
On our drive above the Flumineddu Valley, we enjoy stunning views of this breathtaking area until we arrive at the Gorroppu Gorge – also known as the ‘Grand Canyon of Europe’. Its high, narrow, vertical walls that reach 200 metres make it the deepest and roughest natural gorge in Europe. Over millions of years, the Flumineddu River has eroded the landscape to create the incomparable natural beauty of the gorge. There is chance this afternoon for a little swim in the river’s clear pools. This evening, there is the opportunity to enjoy dinner in a restaurant in Dorgali centre (own expense).
Day 4
The Nuraghes, cone tomb-like towers positioned around the island, are the symbols of Sardinia and of its unique ethnicity. The Nuragici people, who built these towers, are considered as the most accomplished, yet mysterious, civilisation in the Mediterranean. In the morning, we explore this Nuraghic village of Serra Orrios and its complex arrangement of circular huts dating back to the Bronze Age. We then drive to the renowned Giant’s Tomb and onto the small town of Galtelli where we enjoy lunch. We spend the afternoon in Cala Cartoe, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, which is surrounded by rocks, pinewoods and lush Mediterranean scrub.
Day 5
Today is free to explore the archaeological sites of the Dorgali region, take an optional self-guided walk or simply relax by the beach and enjoy the leisurely Sardinian lifestyle. Horse riding can also be arranged for you, which is roughly €70 for 4-5 hours. Alternatively, you can enjoy a wonderful boat trip to Blue Marino Grotto (dependent on weather conditions).
Day 6
After a short transfer, we start our rewarding walk to the deserted village of Tiscali, perhaps the most challenging walk of the week. Tiscali is built in a huge cave inside Monte Corrasi and it is speculated that its inhabitants hid here from the Romans. On our return to the hotel, we make an essential visit to the karstic springs of Su Cologone, where an imposing mass of mineral water carves shapes into the rocks as it gushes out of the impressive gorge. As well as boasting some amazing traditional Sardinian food, it is also the ideal place for bird watching.
Day 7
Cala Luna walk We transfer to Cala Gonone, the centre of the Gulf of Orosei, and complete the week with a coastal walk to Cala Luna, also considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. In the afternoon, we venture into the vast forest and canyon, which offer beautiful views of Cala Luna and its large caves (optional). Alternatively, you may simply decide to swim in the sea and relax on the tranquil beach. Depending on weather, there is the opportunity to return to Dorgali by boat (optional).
