FROM LIBERIA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: (approximately 90 minutes) Leaving the airport, turn right heading toward Santa Cruz, approximately 40 minutes. Just before entering Santa Cruz, before a small bridge, turn right toward Playa Junquillal and Playa Tamarindo. Look for directional signs for The Sanctuary every 5 8 kilometers. At the Y in the road turn left toward Viensiete de Abril and Junquillal. You are now on the dirt road. Go 500 yards, turn right toward Junquillal and Rio Secco. Once you reach Rio Secco, go 1 km. more and look for the exit toward Marbella, Ostinal and The Sanctuary. Turn left, crossing a small bridge and continue toward Marbella. Just over 4 km. past Marbella is the entrance to The Sanctuary on the right. FROM SAN JOSE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: (approximately 4 1/2 hours) Take the Pan American Highway (1) toward San Ramon. Stay on the highway until Limonal. Upon arrival look for a Shell gas station on the left. Turn left toward the Tempisque Bridge. Cross the bridge toward Nicoya. When the road ends turn right toward Nicoya and Santa Cruz. Stay on this road until you pass through Santa Cruz. As you are leaving, you will pass over a small bridge. Costa Rica’s national parks are its greatest glory. Columbus landed in what is now Costa Rica in 1501. Under the rule of General Tomas Guardia between 1870 and 1882, Costa Rica developed many of its principal modern characteristics, notably the minimal role of the Catholic Church in secular matters and an adherence to the principles of democracy. Throughout the 20th century, Costa Rica has enjoyed peace and a steady growth in prosperity, with the notable exception of a civil war in 1948, which followed a disputed presidential election. Significantly, Costa Rica is the only country in the region to have abolished the national army.
In recent times, one of the most prominent political figures has been current President Oscar Arias Sanchez, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 for successfully bringing warring parties elsewhere in Central America to the negotiating table.
Geography Costa Rica, lying between Nicaragua and Panama, is a complete coast-to-coast segment of the Central American isthmus. Its width ranges from 119km to 282km (74 to 176 miles). A low thin line of hills that rises between Lake Nicaragua and the Pacific Ocean in Nicaragua broadens as it enters northern Costa Rica, eventually forming the high, rugged, mountains of volcanic origin in the Pacific Northwest and the center of Costa Rica. The southern half of the country is dominated by mountains of tectonic origin; the highest peak is Chirripó Grande, which reaches 3,820m (12,530ft). More than half the population live on the Meseta Central, a plateau with an equitable climate. It is the setting for the country’s capital, San José. There are lowlands on both coastlines, mainly swampy on the Caribbean coast, with savannah and dry forest on the Pacific Northwest merging into mangrove and rainforest southward. Rivers cut through the mountains, flowing down to both the Caribbean and the Pacific.
