Property Description
Come experience the grace and color of the Grand Cayman experience where it is all about you! The beautifully appointed Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort is oceanfront on spectacular Seven Mile Beach just minutes from the airport and downtown Georgetown. Our recently completed fifteen million dollar renovation has filled the resort with classic Cayman furnishings in warm hues of sea and sun, sand and sky - making it difficult to tell where the hotel ends and the island begins! Guest rooms are drenched in tropical hues of avocado, melon and tangerine accented with rich dark woods. The La Mer Spa and Salon, featuring renowned YonKa therapy, was expanded to include four oversized treatment rooms and a two-bed couples suite with whirlpool. Each of our four restaurants and bars have been reinvented with new names, decor and cuisine offering guests an array of choices. The addition of reef balls has enabled the beach to retain more powder-white sand and attract sea life, providing onsite snorkeling from our new dive shop. The pool area has new decking and resort landscaping has been enhanced. Enjoy our lush tropical garden featuring a serene turtle lagoon and walkways with private seating nooks. The Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort is a Caribbean retreat combining tropical elegance and modern amenities with superior service. Your Marriott Awaits! * Please note effective January 6 2006 all US citizens entering Caribbean countries must present a valid US passport.

It is unlikely that the British, or anybody else for that matter, would have desired the Cayman Islands quite so much when they were first discovered. Columbus originally named the islands ’Las Tortugas’ (The Turtles) because they were utterly covered in them. More worryingly, the word ’Cayman’ probably derives from the Carib word, ’Caymanas’, meaning ’marine crocodile’, suggesting that the islands were also the favored home of scores of lizards. In addition to this, the Cayman Islands have long been associated with the history of buccaneers and pirates, who once established
    hideouts here.

All of this is easy to forget as you luxuriate on wide, sandy beaches with crystal-clear waters that teem with coral reefs and marine creatures. The Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman is particularly popular and deservedly so. Rather than combating pirate invasion, the closest you will probably get to exertion is diving in shipwrecks, walking through rainforest, and letting velvety stingray brush against your legs.

There are three islands in this British Overseas Territory: Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. The latter two are the smaller of the Cayman islands and were discovered by Columbus in 1503. Sir Francis Drake explored the area in 1586, but it was 1670 before the islands came under full British rule. Grand Cayman was settled from Jamaica by 1672; Little Cayman and Cayman Brac were settled some time later and maintained a separate administration until 1877. The governor of Jamaica held administrative responsibility for the islands until 1962, when Jamaica itself became independent. Since then the islands have had their own governor appointed by the British Crown.

    Geography
The Cayman Islands are situated in the Caribbean, 290km (180 miles) northwest of Jamaica, 240km (150 miles) south of Cuba and 770km (480 miles) south of Miami. The island country comprises Grand Cayman, the largest and most populous of the islands, and the sister islands of Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, which lie approximately 143km (89 miles) northeast of Grand Cayman and are separated from each other by a channel about 12km (8 miles) wide. The islands are peaks of a subterranean mountain range extending from Cuba towards the Gulf of Honduras. The beaches are said to be the best in the Caribbean, the most notable being Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman. Tall pines line many of the beaches; those located on the east and west coasts are equally well protected offshore by the Barrier Reef.
