From Grantley Adams International Airport: Take the Airport Highway [ABC Highway] to Spring Garden Highway. [It is a pretty straight drive]. At the Spring Garden roundabout to the West Coast Highway, Highway 1 to Saint James. In St James turn right off the highway at Clark's Rd 1. Sign and landmarks to look out for once you enter the perish of St. James: Jorden's Supermarket on the right side [land side], Crystal Cove Hotel on the left side [sea side], Shell Gas Station at Appleby Rd. This gas station is one block before Clark's Rd 1. Hence, when you see the Shell Gas station at Appleby, indicate for the next right hand turn. This turn and street will be Clark's Rd.1, I do have a sign on the street light post, "Angler Apartments, Garden Bar & Restaurant" with arrow pointing inwards to the street. Follow the road in to the 5th property on the right hand side where you will see the Angler Apartments sign. It is recommended that first timers should not drive from the airport. They must use the transfer service and have their vehicle delivered to the apartments, get familiar with the surroundings before attempting to drive. We do drive on the left hand side of the road. Related Barbados Content

Little is known of the early history of Barbados – it was probably occupied by Arawak Indians from South America until the arrival of the Spanish in 1492. The earliest European arrivals were the Portuguese in the early 16th century. The British established the first settlements in 1627 and declared Barbados a British colony in 1663. African slaves were brought to the island to work on the sugar plantations until the abolition of slavery in the mid 19th century. Barbados joined the West Indies Federation in 1958 and was granted internal self-government three years later. Full independence
within the British Commonwealth was achieved in 1966.

Today, this laid-back island combines pristine beaches, crystal clear water and vibrant flora with great music, delicious food and a strong sense of history and culture. The handsome colonial buildings of the capital, Bridgetown, date mainly from the 18th century. Many of the island’s mixed race population are descendants of the African slaves, brought over to work the colonial sugar plantations.

The dramatic differences between the east and west coast must not be missed. The east (Atlantic side) is less developed and ruggedly beautiful. The Caribbean west coast has more hotel development, but the coastline remains elegant and attractive. The sea is calm and clear and watersports come into their own. The warm Caribbean waters teem with colorful fish swimming in vibrant coral reefs. Visit underwater caves, lush tropical gardens, sugar-cane factories, rum distilleries or plantation houses.

Nightlife is lively with floorshows of limbo dancers and pulsing reggae music – a perfect accompaniment to the Bajan cuisine of spicy seafood, tropical fruits and vegetables, washed down with rum cocktails and fresh fruit juices.

    Geography
Barbados is the most easterly of the Caribbean chain of islands. It lies well to the east of the West Indies. To the west, beaches are made of fine white sand and there are natural coral reefs. Along the east coast there is a lively surf as the sea pounds the more rocky shoreline. Barbados is predominantly flat with only a few gently rolling hills to the north. The coral structure of the island acts as a natural filter and the waters of Barbados are amongst the purest in the world.
