| Compared to neighboring Playa del Carmen and Cancún, the Mexican island of Cozumel is decidedly laid-back. Its eastern side is almost untouched—a place where you’ll find crashing turquoise waves, Mayan ruins, and a craggy, deserted coastline. On the other end of the spectrum, the friendly town of San Miguel offers bars, restaurants, and shops mobbed with cruise-ship tourists. Just south, some of the Caribbean’s most colorful reefs welcome scuba divers to a veritable underwater Mecca. |
