Rainy Day Must Sees in Virginia Beach
By: Jade Broadus
While almost everyday in Virginia Beach is a party in the sand, on the rare occasion that it isn’t perfect sunshine outside, make sure to visit one of these fantastic indoor activities- perfect for the whole family.
The Virginia Aquarium: Highlighting marine life from around the Chesapeake Bay area, the Virginia Aquarium gives visitors an up close experience with local wildlife. For a unique perspective, make sure to get a one on one sea life encounter with the sea turtles and visit the Chesapeake Bay Touch Pool.
This family friendly aquarium is perfect for kids of all ages, with multiple interactive exhibits and encounters with the animals. On weekdays, arrive early and you’ll have the place almost to yourself, besides the sharks and stingrays, that is.
Military Aviation Museum: Home to one of the largest collections of WWI and WWII military aircraft in the world, the Military Aviation Museum is one of a kind. With docents who not only care about their volunteer positions, but also are deeply passionate about the history at the museum, you are bound to learn incredible facts and hear inspiring stories at the museum.
While you don’t need reservations at the museum, make sure to get partnered up with a docent to walk you through the museum. Use this guide as your personal story teller and you’ll get to know the secrets of the museum and aircrafts you might easily miss if you tour on your own.
Old Coast Guard Station: Located in a former beach life saving station, this small oceanfront museum offers a unique perspective of Virginia Beach and its residents. The museum features special boats and shipwreck mementos from the area, as well as displaying old life saving equipment and how the operations worked on a daily basis. This is definitely a fun way to get to know Virginia Beach more closely.
After a visit to the Old Coast Guard Station, stop by one of the many ice cream shops along the boardwalk.
Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art: This non-profit museum curates a special collection of modern art from around the world. This fresh perspective (most of the artists are still living) is unlike many museums today. Teenagers will especially like the varying types of art on display.
The MOCA also partners with several art shows in Virginia Beach throughout the year. Check the dates and see if there is a show during your scheduled vacation to Virginia Beach.
