Spring Skiing & Pond Skimming
Late March and early April are superior times to be skiing here. The sun is often shining and the snow is still deep. We like to end the winter season with a splash—literally. Skiers and boarders compete to skim across an icy pond of water on April 7, 2012. Whitefish Mountain Resort offers skiing and snowboarding through April 8, covering 3,000 acres of glades, groomers, bowls, and steeps, covered in more than 300-inches of Rocky Mountain powder snow. A laid back vibe, short lift lines, and one of the most affordable lift tickets in the nation put Whitefish in a class by itself. Both Vogue Magazine and National Geographic have recently called Whitefish one of the best ski towns in the nation, plus Budget Travel voted us one of the top 10 "cool" towns.
While snow still covers the valley floor, the Glacier Nordic Center offers more than 7 miles of Nordic trails that meander over our 36-hole golf course, just outside downtown. The Outback Ski Shack offers lessons and equipment, plus many of the trails are lit at night.
Stillwater Mountain Lodge offers 12 miles of groomed Nordic skiing around the Beaver Lake area are just a short drive north of Whitefish. Ski through old growth forests, over ridge tops and along lakeshores, plus enjoy several groomed tracks for skiers and their dogs.
A few more miles outside of town, Round Meadows Nordic area is located on the Flathead National Forest. The trails are only groomed intermittently, but you will be rewarded with nice wooded tracks and serene silence.
