This is the granddaddy of Notting Hill, Brooklyn, and a host of other well-known celebrations of West Indian culture: the carnival spirit is engrained into the soul of Trinidadians and they devote a quarter of the year to the preparation, build-up and staging of one of the world’s biggest and best street parties. Words can’t begin to describe the color, costumes and frenetic celebrations of this multi—day bender: you’ll just have to come and see for yourself. Seeing the costumed “Mas” characters battle it out, fireworks and “merry monarch” on the final day (involving pelting each other’s laboriously crafted costumes in mud, oil and the like) are some of the many highlights.
