Holy Week

As with most Latin American countries, religious festivals are colorful affairs. Festivities and celebrations over Holy Week are a countrywide event in Nicaragua. Each town and city celebrates Holy Week differently and visitors will be spoilt for choice when it comes to picking which town’s festival they would like to attend. The towns of Nandaime, San Juan de Oriente, Masaya and San Jose de Gracia celebrate the festival by sending ox-drawn carts carrying pilgrims and flags to the Popoyupa Sanctuary in Rivas. Granada celebrates Holy Week by sending an image of Jesus by boat (with hundreds of pilgrims) to 14 of the islands nearby. The town of Leon covers the main streets with colorful sawdust, while Masaya blankets its streets with flowers.
