4/01/2009 - 5/31/2009Elephant Races
Dac Lac,
Vietnam
The beating of drums and the banging of gongs signals the start of the Elephant Races in the Buon Don District in the Central Highlands of the Dac Lac region. Ridden by two 'jockeys' - one for speed and one for direction - approximately 10 elephants line up side by side before setting off and surprisingly fast pace towards the finish line. This is a hugely popular event in the region that each year attracts large crowds of both locals and tourists. The Dac Lac province is famed throughout the country for its resident elephant population and visitors can watch elephant tug-of-wars, an elephant football match and elephant swimming competitions. Many people also enjoy an elephant ride through the surrounding forests.
