11/01/2009 - 11/30/2009London-Brighton Veteran Car Run
London-Brighton,
United Kingdom
It may be a car rally, but don't expect Formula 1 speeds. The Royal Automobile Club's annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run sees approximately 500 pre-1905 manufactured cars from around the world 'race' on a route through the streets of London down to the seaside town of Brighton. On the Saturday before the run, car enthusiasts gather in Regent Street where some of the vintage vehicles are on display enabling members of the public to take a closer look at these marvellous machines. The history of the event dates back to 1896 making it the oldest and longest-running motoring event in the world. The rally was first held in celebration of the passing of the Locomotives on the Highway Act which raised the speed limit for light locomotives from 4mph to 14mph and abolished the requirement for these vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot. It is free to spectate at any point along the 97km (60 mile) route and a map highlighting the best vantage points is available to download free from the website.
