6/21/2008 - 7/22/2008Scottish Traditional Boat Festival
Portsoy, Banff,
United Kingdom
All kinds of small boats fill the little harbour at Portsoy for a full weekend of family entertainment. Approximately 80 traditional boats participate each year and visitors are able to learn about seagoing matters and the maritime industry through demonstrations and exhibits whilst being entertained by a non-stop programme of music, dance and drama. There are demonstrations by potters, blacksmiths, weavers, lace and candle makers, model makers and basket weavers as well as opportunities to learn about natural history, lighthouses and maritime heritage. Further attractions include a food fair in a large marquee, 2km (1.25 miles) and 10km (6.25 miles) road races, fire fighting and other demonstrations. As part of its broader remit, the festival helps educate young people in the rich traditional culture of Scotland's North East.
