a) For those coming from countries without embassies or consulates of Turkmenistan, entry visas may be obtained for a maximum of 10 days on arrival, provided holding an invitation from a company in Turkmenistan; (b) Tourists should normally book through a recognized tour operator, who will obtain visas on their behalf; (c) Visitors intending to stay for more than three months must produce a certificate stating that they are HIV-negative.

The land border between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan has been closed. Security has been strengthened on the other land borders.
Turkmenistan has toughened regulations for entering the country in connection with the mourning for the death of the president on 21 December 2006. Entry into the country is now permitted only if a visa had been obtained earlier. Previously, if a person had an invitation, they could obtain a visa on their arrival in the country, but this procedure has now been abolished.
The President of Turkmenistan died on 21 December 2006. The situation appears calm.
Travelers should be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks which could be against civilian targets including places frequented by foreigners.
Travelers should carry an identity document at all times. Requests to produce proof of identity, for example by the police, are frequent.
Travelers must not overstay their visas. Travelers should also register with the State Service of Turkmenistan for the Registration of Foreign Nationals if staying for more than three days.
Travelers should ensure inoculations are up to date. Typhoid and Hepatitis A are endemic.

Health CareMedical insurance, including cover for emergency repatriation, is highly recommended. Medical facilities are poor, high levels of disease have been reported. Travelers are advised to take a well-equipped first aid kit with them containing basic medicines and any prescriptions that they may need.
