4/23/2008 - 4/23/2008National Independence and Children's Day
Countrywide,
Turkey
A national holiday recognised throughout Turkey, 23 April is National Independence and Children's Day. The founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, dedicated 23 April to children as he believed that they were the future of the new nation. And it was on this day in 1920, during the War of Independence, that the Grand National Assembly met in Ankara to lay down the foundations for the newly independent Turkey. Each year a ceremony honouring the man takes place at Ataturk's Mausoleum in Istanbul. Other events and ceremonies, many involving school children, take place throughout the country and particularly in the bigger towns and cities.
