Each year about 4,000 runners battle a tough course and the heat during the Phuket International Marathon. Open to over 18s from all over the world, runners can compete in a full 42km (26 miles) marathon or the 21km (13 miles) half marathon; there is also a 10km (6 miles) fun run for runners aged 12 and over, a 5km (3 miles) walk and a 1km (0.6 miles) kids' run. The race attracts runners from all over the world and has great support from the local community who turn out en masse to cheer on the runners. The inaugural marathon took place in 2006 as part of Phuket's bid to recover after the devastating December 2004 tsunami disaster.

Air: Regular flights from Bangkok to Phuket.
Road: Highway 4 connects Bangkok to Phuket.
Bus: Numerous buses leave Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal for Phuket each day. The journey for both car and bus is around 12 hours.
