6/01/2009 - 7/31/2009Phi Ta Khon
Thailand
Not too dissimilar from the Halloween traditions typical in the West, Phi Ta Khon is an ancient Thai tradition. Its exact origins are unknown, but it's thought to date back to Buddha's previous life before he reached Nirvana. But whatever its beginnings, it is a time to don ghoulish outfits and take to the streets for a little light-hearted fun and mischief. Coinciding with the arrival of the sixth or seventh lunar month, visitors to the region during this time should not be alarmed if they see ghostly figures wandering the streets with many of the participants garbed in elaborate costumes and scary masks. Celebrations last for three full days and culminate with a ceremony at the local temple.
