The Lantern Festival is one of the most important festivals in the Chinese calendar and is celebrated on the first full moon of the Chinese New Year. Intricate lanterns are made using tissue paper and light balsa wood frames which are then decorated with images of birds and other mythical figures. Lights are placed inside and the sight of hundreds of lanterns creates an incredible spectacle. Lantern events take place throughout Taiwan but the country's biggest festivals take place in the larger towns and cities.
