Many directors make their debut at this, the leading competitive film festival of Northern Europe. Ever since the first festival in 1990, the purpose has been to launch young filmmakers and to broaden the forum for quality innovative films in Scandinavia. It is a groundbreaking event, and also one which honours past achievements - Elia Kazan, Gena Rowlands, Roman Polanski and Lauren Bacall have all been the subject of retrospectives. Among the distinguished guest list from past years are Dennis Hopper, Quentin Tarantino, the Coen brothers, Lars von Trier, Rod Steiger, Roger Corman, Ang Lee and Alexandr Sokurov. More than 70,000 visitors view the 150 or so films on offer each year. A prestigious prize - a hefty bronze horse - is presented to the winning filmmaker.
