A popular religious and cultural event, the annual Duruthu Perahera celebrates Lord Buddha's third visit to Sri Lanka and is marked by a huge procession and festival. The parade makes its way through the streets of Colombo on a route towards Rajamatia Viharaya, the sacred temple in the west of the province. The festival was first held in 1927 and continues to be one of the region's most popular pageants and religious festivals.
