1/01/2007 - 12/31/2007Alicante Moors and Christians
Alicante,
Spain
The time-honoured re-enactment of the historic conflicts between Spanish Christian and the Moors of North Africa takes place in Alicante five times each year, each time in a different district of the city. The formula in each case is similar and celebrates the liberation of Spain from Arab rule. This is represented by different "armies" of soldiers of all ranks, both Christian and Moorish, down to fork-carrying peasants, parading through the city streets with great noise and clamour. On the last day the big battle is re-enacted with great ceremony and enthusiasm in each of the respective district centres. The festival ends with the retreat of the armies followed by a sociable celebration including music, food and drink
