In addition to the usual New Year's Eve celebrations that take place throughout the island, the Mallorcan capital of Palma also celebrates the Fiesta de l'Estandard. It remembers the Christian conquest of the city by King Jaime I in 1229. A procession makes its way from the town hall to the cathedral in the centre of Palma where a special service is held. The day traditionally ends with a lavish feast with friends and family to welcome in the New Year.
