9/01/2009 - 9/30/2009Festival of Our Lady of Mercy (Festa de la Merce)
Barcelona,
Spain
A plague of locusts was banished from the city in 1687 by the Virgin of Mercy, and the miracle has been celebrated ever since - with this, one of Barcelona's biggest and noisiest festivals. The main event takes place on 24 September, the day when musicians and performers mingle with the crowds in the streets, while symbolic giants shamble in procession along the avenues. A great number of concerts and events also take place on this day, as well as on the preceding and following days, and it is worth noting that, on the 24th, entry to Barcelona's museums is free. About 100 music and performance concerts are held in various venues and there are several hundred fringe events held over the course of about four days.
