6/14/2009 - 6/14/2009Corpus Christi
Seville,
Spain
Corpus Christi is the Festival of the Catholic Church which commemorates the Eucharist. In Seville, as elsewhere in Spain, it is a very devout religious occasion and one that is also celebrated with festive events. On the morning of Corpus, the houses and streets of the city are decorated with flowers. In the cathedral, a mass is celebrated in which small boys dressed in red and gold, known as the 'Seise', sing and perform a traditional dance. A number of biers with sacred effigies - the most significant being the statue of the 'Custodia' - are carried through the streets in a procession leaving from the San Miguel gateway of the cathedral in the early morning.
