3/01/2009 - 4/30/2009April Fair (Feria de Abril)
Seville,
Spain
Seville's annual fair began as a cattle market in 1847. The festivity of the occasion gradually outgrew the agricultural side of the event and now, as in most Spanish cities, the annual fair is an extended extravaganza of fun and entertainment. Seville boasts one of the largest fairs, with over 1,000 'casetas', or tents installed in the fairground area. Each one is a hub of social activity with loud music, eating, drinking and partying into the early hours of the morning. At noon each day the 'Paseo de Caballos' takes place, a procession of horse drawn carriages through the city streets, each one filled with local beauties in full flamenco dresses. Bullfighting forms an important part of the evening agenda, with some of the top corridas taking place at the Plaza de Toros de Maestranza. Music, dancing and rides at a big funfair are among the other main attractions.
