12/01/2008 - 12/31/2008Santa Llucia Christmas Fair
Barcelona,
Spain
In December right up to Christmas Eve Barcelona holds its Flea Market, the Fira de Santa Llucia, in the little square in front of the Cathedral. This provides a good sample of Catalan festive life and a place to stock up on Christmas decorations and trinkets. Quite unmissable are the "cagneres", little figures, sometimes in Santa garb, who are crouched with bottom bared preparing to relieve themselves. Often used in nativity scenes, they have something to do with fertility. The stalls sell handicrafts, gifts and turron, a sweet nougat that is traditional in Spain at Christmas. The 28 December is a local equivalent of April Fool's Day when musicians, artists and entertainers descend on the streets
