1/01/2010 - 2/28/2010Kavadi Thaipoosum Festival
Various,
Seychelles
Celebrated by Hindus all over the world, the festival celebrates the birthday of Lord Murugan, the warrior deity of the hills. During the event, believers carry heavy 'kavadis' - literally meaning burdens, which are usually pots offered to Lord Murugan whilst praying in exchange for his blessings. Also known as 'Kavadi Thaipusam' in other parts of the world, the event is mainly thought of as a Hindu Tamil celebration. The first Kavadi Thaipoosum Festival in the Seychelles was held in 1993 and has since become a popular event with all faiths coming together to celebrate the day and watch the colourful processions.
