12/31/2009 - 1/01/2010New Year
Moscow,
Russia
Traditionally, New Year's Eve in Russia was a private affair celebrated at home with friends, families and loved ones. But more recently, Muscovites have been heading outdoors to take the parties into public spaces to be enjoyed in large groups. Red Square in the heart of Moscow is one of the most popular meeting points which in the build up towards midnight, fills with revellers of all ages. 'Noivy God', as New Year's Eve is known in Russian, is a popular celebration with large crowds gathering to hear the bells of the Kremlin strike at midnight. Some people dress up for the occasion, donning costumes from Russian folklore such as 'Grandfather Frost' or the 'Snow Maiden'.
