Many of Russia's bigger towns and cities have a City Day on which they celebrate their culture and history. St Petersburg gives itself a big pat on the back each May, celebrating its City Day with parades, special historical displays, public music concerts and a fireworks display. City Days have been celebrated since 1986 when the tradition was introduced by the then Secretary of the Moscow City Committee, Boris Yeltsin.
