The Nossa Senhora dos Remedios Festivities are amongst the biggest and most spectacular religious celebrations in the region. During this time, thousands of religious pilgrims descend on the town to pay homage to Nossa Senhora dos Remedios (also known as 'Our Lady'). Part of the pilgrimage includes an ascent of a 700-step staircase to the Shrine of Our Lady, which many attempt to complete on their knees as a form of penance. The event also has a less serious side with events such as the colourful Battle of the Flowers, where local residents compete to see who can create the most spectacular floral display.
