3/07/2008 - 3/16/2008Ica Wine Festival
Ica,
Peru
The Ica Valley has been a prolific area for growing grape vines for years, due to its warm coastal climate and secluded location. Most of the grapes grown in the area are used to make pisco, the famous Peruvian grape brandy. Ica celebrates the abundance of its yearly harvest with processions, fairs, music concerts and parties. Everyone joins in with the popular African-influenced dance of the coastal region, the 'festejo'. The biggest event of the festival is the election of the Wine Queen and her hand maidens and the winners of the pageant are required to tread grapes in a large vat. Special feast-time sweets are accompanied by a glass or two of pisco as revellers enjoy the yearly celebration.
