    10/18/2009 - 10/28/2009Our Lord of Miracles

    Lima, Peru
The patron saint of Lima, Our Lord of Miracles (Nuestro Senor de los Milagros), has acquired mythic status and a cult following that has spread through and beyond the capital. In October a host of ceremonies are devoted to the saint, represented by a painted image of a black Christ. On the day of Our Lord of Miracles the image, on an elaborate bier, is carried through the streets of the city in a great and solemn procession, accompanied by chanting, clouds of incense and the tolling of church bells. Hundreds of thousands of devotees and trinket vendors throng the streets, many of them drawn by the saint's reputation for healing. It is an awe-inspiring spectacle, charged with emotion and vibrant with the saint's colour, purple. This is one of Peru's most popular celebrations and the secular side of it is not neglected - Peruvian specialities are on offer from stalls and there are concerts and a firework display to round-out a Catholic spectacular with a full Latin flavour.
