7/01/2009 - 7/31/2009Independence Day
Lima and various,
Peru
The 'Fiestas Patrias' are celebrated all over Peru and especially in the capital, Lima. Military processions, music and school processions are the staples of this occasion, and fireworks on the Plaza de Armas in the case of Lima. These patriotic celebrations recall the Declaration of Peru's Independence in 1821, and many homes fly the Peruvian flag from the beginning of the month. On the evening of 27 July, musical serenades often take place in parks and squares. Sleep is interrupted at dawn on 28 July with a salvo of 21 cannon, which is followed by the raising of the flag. Lima's grand military parade in downtown Lima is preceded by the Te Deum ceremony, held in Lima Cathedral.
